Why Small Businesses Need Google Ads
As a small business owner, your time and budget are precious resources. Organic visibility through SEO is powerful and provides great ROI, but it takes time. If you want results now, Google Ads (formerly AdWords) delivers immediate exposure, placing your business at the top of search results the same day your campaign launches.
Google Ads is especially relevant when you’re:
- Launching a new venture and need quick traction
- Competing in a crowded market like Sydney or Melbourne, where SEO alone may struggle.
- Working with a high customer lifetime value that justifies the ad spend.
For example, businesses spending more than $2,000 per month on Google Ads have seen meaningful ROI, making paid advertising not just sustainable, but worthwhile.
Google Ads however is changing rapidly, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to highlight the key changes:
-
AI-First Transformation
- At Google Marketing Live 2025, Google unveiled the Power Pack – next-gen AI-powered campaign tools across Search, Video, Apps, Creative, and Measurement Google Help.
- Ads are now integrated into Google’s AI features like AI Overviews and AI Mode, initially launched on mobile and expanding to desktop and international markets
-
Campaign Automation & Creative AI
- Enhanced automation with tools like Veo (text-to-video), Imagen (text-to-image), and Smart Bidding Exploration that adapt to more complex user queries
- Responsive Search Ads (RSAs) now benefit from dynamic assembly by AI, offering more flexibility in headlines and descriptions, even adding links directly from them.
- Creative tools now generate lifestyle imagery using generative AI, plus personalized asset recommendations and testing options in Performance Max campaigns.
-
Demand Gen Campaigns Replace Older Formats
- Video Action Campaigns are being phased out, starting with a halt on new creations in April 2025 and auto-upgrades to Demand Gen in mid-2025
- Demand Gen now brings unified AI-powered targeting across YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and the Display Network, with better creative flexibility and reporting.
-
Performance Max & Channel Controls
- Performance Max campaigns now offer improved transparency (like channel-level reporting) and search term insights in the UI, plus AI-generated asset suggestions via Gemini and stricter enforcement for financial service ads.
- New channel controls enable advertisers to selectively target YouTube, Shorts, Gmail, or Discover within Demand Gen campaigns.
-
Smarter Bidding & Exploration
- Smart Bidding got a boost in June 2025: more signals (first-party data, behavior, context) and better budget pacing.
- Exploration Mode in Smart Bidding allows testing new high-intent queries without changing targeting or segmentation.
-
Privacy & First-Party Data Emphasis
- With third-party cookies on the decline, Google has strengthened reliance on first-party (hashed) data, conversion modeling, and Consent Mode v2 to maintain tracking effectiveness.
-
Ad Sharing Deprecation & Asset-Based Shift
- Starting October 15, 2025, creating new shared ads will be blocked. By Q1 2026, existing shared ads will be automatically converted to individual assets tailored per Ad Group
- This reflects Google’s pivot toward asset-based ad formats like RSAs and Performance Max, aligning with dynamic assembly rather than static, replicated ads.
-
Reporting Standardisation
- As of April 21, 2025, Google Merchant Center product clicks align with Google Ads reporting, enhancing consistency across platforms.
-
Ethical & Regional Policy Changes
- Political ads will be banned in the EU ahead of the TTPA regulations coming into effect in October 2025, due to legal uncertainties.
- New policy enforcement bans deepfake pornography ads, effective May 2024, underlining stricter regulation of AI misuse in ad content.
